Following Mason’s surgery in February at Bristol Royal Children’s Hospital, we wanted to share an update on how his recovery has progressed over the past few months. We we inundated with lovely messages of support throughout so firstly a big thank you to everyone who took the time to get in touch!
The first few weeks at home were slow and required patience. Although the operation was successful, recovery from major abdominal surgery takes time, and Mason needed to rebuild his strength and confidence gradually while sticking to light duties.
As an active little boy, he did a great job following this plan for the full six weeks, though there were a few moments where his confidence outpaced his recovery, turning a walk into a run, trying to boot a football, or attempting to climb something a bit too soon. More than once, Mum or Dad had to step in with a quick reminder that his body was still catching up with his enthusiasm.
As the weeks passed, things steadily improved. His energy returned, strength built back up, and before long he was back to his usual cheerful, active self. The surgical scar remains visible but has healed well, marking another milestone in a journey that continues to show his resilience.
A key milestone came during a follow-up visit to Bristol, where histology results confirmed that the mass removed from Mason’s spleen was completely non-cancerous. After months of uncertainty, the result was simply good news to hear and accept, rather than something we felt able to celebrate in any big way, having learned over the years to always prepare for the worst.
Further scans were also reassuring, showing that his spleen and surrounding organs have healed well and are functioning as expected.
Today, Mason is fully back to himself. He has returned to football and swimming and is thriving in both, enjoying being back with no restrictions. He recently completed his marathon band milestone at junior parkrun, and at home has been pushing the boundaries with front flips on the trampoline.
Looking back, we are grateful for the care and expertise of everyone involved in Mason’s treatment, from the surgical team in Bristol to those supporting him locally. What began as another uncertain chapter has ended with positive news and a healthy, active boy back doing what he loves.
